Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Image
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia No time to unpack! After placing our luggage in our hotel room, we are out the door in a flash, almost tripping over our own feet to get to the pedestrian streets of Chinatown. Settling in at the “pink tablecloth” restaurant, our attention is soon solely on scooping out the chicken and veggie rice from the coconut it was baked in….traditionally our first Kuala Lumpur meal and it’s as awesome as ever! “Mama” comes over to check if all is okay with our order; this 60-ish smiling army-sergeant lady will instruct her staff to right any wrong pronto. Our next day’s supper is always the lemon chicken, so crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside and swimming in tangy fresh lemon sauce, pared with savoury BBQ pork rice at the “yellow tablecloth” just down from the “pinks” – names we have given these restaurants as they have not digressed from their trademark tablecloth colour “since always” say the staff, who never seem to change either, except they’

Kefalonia Island, Greece: Our 5 Day Travel Guide “Look at the colour of the water, these beaches are amazing!” Nick and I were grinning ear to ear on the drive from the ferry terminal to our hotel. From the farmland and vineyards of the Paliki Peninsula, to the sheer cliffs and rocky shoreline of the north, this island is filled with surprises. With just 4 nights to get under the skin of Kefalonia Greece, we consulted our map and came up with a game plan to tackle the island – which ended up being one of our favourite places to visit in Greece. Kefalonia Island: Lassi & Argostoli As with our travels on Zakynthos Island, our first stop wa

Discovering the Origins of Humankind in Northern Kenya Renowned paleontologist Louise Leakey guides travelers on explorations of Lake Turkana, an ancient body of water in eastern Africa where even today some of the oldest human fossils are still being discovered. As the helicopter rose over a ridge, I caught my first glimpse of Lake Turkana, a breathtaking sky-blue crescent in the desert of northern Kenya. Nomadic fishermen still make camp on spits of land that reach into its alkaline waters, which fill a basin formed more than 4 million years ago. Brightly colored mineral pools dot the shores of the lake. Little volcanoes poke through its reflective surface, including one, known as Central Island, that is still active. A smaller lake inside the crater is home to thousands of flamingos. Thanks to Lake Turkana's rich fossil record, it is one of the world's great laboratories for the study of human origins. I had come with Louise Leakey, a paleontologist from a family o
